Mary Jane Paper Towel Method: How Wet is Wet Enough?
permalink

I had the chance to talk to a man who tests seed germination rates for a living. One of the questions I had was about moisture in paper towels. They have developed a recipe that is basically done by weight.

Take paper towels, weigh them. Add water in a 2:1 weight ratio. So if your PTs weigh 10g, put in 20ml water (1ml H2O = 1gm weight).

This eliminates eyeballing and guessing. -CR

Here is what has worked for me in the past.

Put water in a plate, hopefully one which will hold a far amount of water.

Place a sponge in the plate with the water.

If the sponge is new, rinse out any soap produce in the sponge.

Put the paper towel on the sponge. Keep water in the plate through out germination.

You need the water to be worm, so you might use a heating pad to place the plate on if the pad does not get too hot.

Hope this helps.

I just fold my paper towl into a quarter towl,
hold it under running lukewarm water,
hold it by 1 corner till it quits dripping,
open it up, drop my beans,
fold it back together and put it into a Zip Sandwich bag and throw it on top of my PC tower,

works every time!!

I use Bounty by the way

i personally drench the paper towel. put seeds in, place it into a zip lock bag. i also blow into the bag, i have herd it increasing germ rates. its not hard to do so worth a try right? i have noticed when doing that. if the paper towel isent wet enough the water will form to the roof of the sappy bag leaving the paper towel 100% dry.
if i had to guesstimate the germ rate i would say 83.77%
