Paper Towel Germination at Room Temperature?
permalink

I am germinating seeds using wet paper towels in a tupperware container .

But i haven't been able to find them a spot where there is heat .

So i am forced to do it at room temperature.

I am wondering around how long this would usually take .

and how much shorter it would be if i were to have them under a light ?

Depending on where you live... this is usualy fine. Try under your bed.

If you didn't pre-soak them in water, then I'd say about 24-96 hours, depending on the quality of the seeds.

The Seeds should be placed in a DARK location, not lit location, so no go

------

If you need discreet heat, you can buy a ceramic heater for about $9 at a pet store. They are used for reptiles and fish. But Any warm location in your home should be fine. I used to use my Computer Monitor.

Good luck!

Yeah, I just did the tupper wear way for like the 5th time and I had 1/4" tap roots the next day everytime at room temp of 73 in a dark location, If you are worried about the temp being to low get 2 dinner plates. Put one on the ground and put your paper towels/seeds in and then put the other plate on top, upside down, and put in a dark place, this way the plates will pick up a little heat.

hey tsep-
to keep warm, i use a heating pad (like the kind for your back) that i found at a thrift store for $2.00. i also use it to get them to sprout after putting popped seeds in rockwool, i just set the tray with humidity dome on top of it. in both cases, i use the low setting, so i don't cook them. putting them under a light isn't really a good idea, as they seem to like the dark. i only put the popped seeds that are in rockwool under light (flouros).
hope this helps.
peace-

Hey! I was doing some research, and they said that if your plants are having trouble sprouting, you can put them under a compact flo but be sure not to cook them.

Good Luck,
GT

I use two china plates with the paper towels in between. The plates radiate the heat nicely. The vents on top of your PC monitor stay pretty warm...

Just my 2 cents, I have used paper towel method in plastic tuperware every time. Not once have I done it at anything other then room temp. And I never had a problem germing, on my previous 3 bagseed grows I had a 95% germ rate. this last time where I got seeds from a seedbank I had a 100% germ rate within 2 days. I would be skepetical about useing a computer moniter to to warm them. Because computer moniters gives off radiation. I know there is a shield to block it but, does every thing in this world work 100% ? I say not.
And I dont know how radiation would effect a seed, but since I have never had a problem at room temp. Why fix what aint broke? When it comes to temp just think about how cold the ground is when life does start in spring, its much colder then room temp. So it is my belief that room temp is well above the needed temp to germ.

The big problem with "room temperature" is this is a global board. Some people live in baking deserts, others frozen wastelands. Some people have heating/air con, others do not

I'm germing right now, and from what I've read so far, its best to keep to the mid 20'sC (70sF) or above.

Andru,

Not meaning to nitpick....

but I think even Eskimos and Bedoins have room teperature that would germinate seeds.

I can't imagine someone sitting at their computer reading this....

who is freezing or baking within their home.

Room temperature is relative, but we all understand what it is.
