I'm a big fan of the KISS methodology, so I won't have any answers for ya.

Heat: Never used supplemental heat. I wanted a way to germinate that I didn't need to watch over them or add anything, etc. So, I don't know.

Water: I use regular tap water. I don't buy bottled water for my family, I'm not about to buy it for my seeds.

I see no reason why you can't transfer your seeds to a cup and try to germinate them that way. Shouldn't hurt 'em any.

hey - cool! that looks pretty easy, and using your method would mean you dont have to be so paranoid that the paper towel will dry out (um, not that that has happened to ME of course, )

i may actually give that a try next time - although i was 6 for 9 with the paper towel method just a week ago...hopefully most of these will be females

j_b - good to see you in this post as well! keep reading and absorbing info from this site...it WILL pay off!

as for water - i use tap water personally. however, i have noticed that my pH fluctuates a LOT. so i do check and use something to decrease the pH as soon as i plant....

Worth a bump back up as this is the only method I've ever used.

I've soaked 15 Chronic and 15 White Russian which are now in soil, so we'll see what happens.

DickCheese is starting to vegetate.

This is the system I use also, and works very well for me. only thing I could add is put them in your soil point of seed down, this will get them up a day sooner, I have tested this.... and don't go more then a 1/2" deep. myself only go 1/8" to 1/4" deep.

After an 16-18 hour soak I had 14 of 30 popping shells in water.

36 hours on, and in soil this morning seen the first one break surface.

I agree with the depth DC. You can add soil but diggin it out is futile. If it hasn't sprung at less than half inch even if upside down, it's not worth the investigation. Certainly saves a lot of speculation.

...... and 14 of the 15 chronic have popped. The white Russians didn't pop even when in water, but I'm not pushing them, they'll come.

.....9 days since putting in soak.

It works for me although the White Russians were a disaster. The same soak time, soil, dome and care throughout. I'll be making contact with Serious Seeds today and see if they can give any feedback. Only 5 Russians popped whhen 14 of the 15 Chronics popped. Same everything as I say and I'll be updating to see what Serious say.

Johnnyhempseed is beginning to sprout.

I love the cup of water.

Two grows 100% germination, total of 18 seeds, what not to like.

russians ...

Hey Mr Burns .... the Russians seem to take a little longer than other beans. I've just germed a few russians and some g13's and both took longer than usual. I had them in the cup 'o water for about 6 days b4 seeing a tap.

Try changing the water once in a while with some warm water to keep it from going too cold. The warmer water seemed to help the beans break out of the shell sooner than it did with my room temperature attempts.

Good Luck
