Johnnyhempseed is beginning to sprout.

The stem being white at the begining of germination is normal.

art0_saar1 is growing every day.art0_saar1 is growing every day.

Did those little starter leaves fall off when you pulled the shell off, leaving only a stem? If you only got a stem then death is bound to happen soon, But if those little oval leaves are intact you should be fine

Got a question....

Is it completely necessary for seeds to germinate in the dark? Is it possible for them to grow in this scenario(sp?)

Clay pellets80%

coco coir 20%

Both are nicely moist but not soaking.

Seeds wich were pre soaked for about 20 hours in cup o water
and stored in a dark place.

The seeds were then placed in Rapid Rooter Grow Plugs, a sponge like material made of composted tree bark and organic materials.

These were placed in the coco coir that is about 3 inches thick.

Total of 12 are placed under a 400 watt HPS there is about 2-1/2 feet in between them.

Turn the lights off? Or would the heat help them germinate?

Cool

Does anyone simply germinate their seeds in soil? Have you had success with this method? This is my first grow, and that is what I did @36 hours ago with my first 12 seeds. I've got my fingers crossed, but will probably try the cup o' water method for the next dozen. Mayble I'll post again when and if they sprout!

Yeah, you can do that too. After all thats how they germinate in nature.

But i think i f^&*d up by putting them under lights. I turned my lights off since no one replied to my question.

I just hate having to handle seedlings and maybe expose them to cold air ot might break the little root. But whatever, i still got some more seeds if that doesnt work.

This is a great method, i tried it on sat night and its by far the fastest and easiest method i've tried.

Only thing is my beans initially sunk then a few hours later came up and i started panicking but 12 hours later 8/10 have split and shown tap root wohoo

This thread should become a sticky in germination

Great Method, thnks for the info Plainsman

3 days after planting 12 seeds in soil, I had ten healthy sprouts. Two of the twelve did not make it...they did however germinate, but just didn't survive. Next time I'm goin for this method!

MS.
I wouldn't germ under HPS or any light for that matter, but it's not a rule that they must be buried. It's just good plant husbandry alongside history telling us that dark and moist soil is best. Yes yes yes nature does say they are normally buried but how does the tree or plant get em in the ground? They don't. They either get eaten and end up crapped out into a little nursery of unmolested poo, or they root above ground and the tap root does the work. So burying does have it's part, but nature doesn't state that it's the no1 method, nor having total darkness.
We all see wall flowers and plants growing and the seeds didn't get there in the cement, they blew there and rested in good ole sunshine waiting for a watering. Again yes seeds have a different way of germing but it's not set in stone. Amongst peppers and egg plants we grow a lot of Lupins which are notorious for flowering only from their second year on. We get a first year flowering rate of 99%which blows that theory off the shelf, so don't take waht you read and what others write as gospel. Me included!!

What I'm trying o say is find your own method but don't go using something way out of the ordinary. Like a 400HPS!!
A favoured method may not work with you so try an infavourable one. You may trip into a perfect set up?

As for soaking seeds, as ong as you don't go over 24 Celcius with the water you should be fine. I leave the tap root until it's the length of the seed husk and if you have any doubts which way up you'd like the seed, plant it sideways and let the tap root follow gravity.

As for floating seeds. I've had one show a tap root that floated and it's flowering in me room now......

Never tug it. It'll come off of it's own accord unless your enviroment is as dry as a badgers tit.
