Unusually low germination a fluke?
permalink

When I was a kid, I used to fool around with the great weed and would always get really high germination rates out of bag seed. Now I'm retired and juggling so much pain that I am taking TWO kinds of morphine to manage it(albeit not very well).

So...I completely detached from the herbal community so I buy some seed from an Amsterdam source(I'm not going to bash them at this point). I get 20 seeds and a grand total of 3 surface. A few more than that do germinate using the paper towel method(but never go past the taproot stage).

Now, I'm kinda slow on the uptake, but my math says that's at 15%. If I purchased seed (any seed) for my farm and 85% didn't germinate, I'd have a HUGE issue with it.

I complained to the source (they seem to have gone hard of hearing), and have ordered different seed from my neighbor way up north, M.E.

Is this level of germination unusually low bought from a seed bank or does it happen with any frequency?

hmmm...

never go past the taproot stage?

so wait, your saying then, they got to the taproot stage... and died?

I would then be questioning your germination technique.

not the breeder.

I got the seeds from amsterdamseeds.com, the strain was first girl (early girl maybe?), the seed bag wastn't professonally labeled. It said "1G". The seeds were small and dark in color but no stripes or patterns.

I germinated them using 6 paper towels, folded over, in a Tupperware plate with cover, on top of my entertainment systems amp (91 F measured) and in the dark. I didn't drown them and they sayed moist. I gave up on the other 15 seeds after 14 days.

5 popped and rooted, 3 made it to the leaf stage, 2 didn't.

I guess burner would have a point. But dude, I'm a trained/registered seed distributer (Means I can buy and plant grass/food plot seeds for $$), so I know how to document seed germination problems...albeit the state prolly didn't have this kind o' seeds in mind.

My question still holds...The folks over there have chosen to respond to my queries with silence, which is why I'm asking here.

I'm not looking for blame at this point. They got my money and I can't exactly report them to the local authorities.

Although I have ordered some new seeds from a different source, I was looking for some objective opinions (if that's possible).

Post your story in as many places as possible, send them a link to them all, tell them that you will delete the salnderous stories as soon as you are refunded your hard erned money.

If they don't wanna talk then find, let see how much business they get if you put your story all over the place about how ****ty their seeds are.

THere will always be the rip off seed comapnies, thats why every forum talking about mj cult has a few people hanging around who are the honest seed distributers, i'd look for/talk to them.

I also have had some real poor germination rates. I have ordered over ten different times and each time I got my seeds sometimes I had less than 15% sucess rate. 95 degrees sounds a little on the hot side but if the others made it's most likely ok.

I've bought cheep beans, expensive ones, and some in between. I bought some 300$ beans and got 3/15 two boys and a girl i was soo hot!!! I feel its a crap shoot. I think it might have something to do with old stock or irradiated mail but these are just guesses.

Imagine yourself the head shop owner you buy a whole selection of beans you sell some you don't sell others it would seem likely that some would just sit on a shelf for a year or two until somebody orders it.
There are no born on dates on the package well you see where I’m going with this. After some success with the other plants try to make your own cross for a batch of fresh beans or order something "new and improved" so the stock will be fresh. Good luck Here's some karma to help your mind feel better
