Putting the lights on before or after sprouting?
permalink

Hey guys, sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it in the search. On the growguide it says you can put the lights on right away, before the sprout even pokes out of the soil. But, I've also heard that it's reccomended not to put the lights on until after it sprouts.

I figured I would leave a baggie over it before sprouting to keep the moisture in, then when I saw the sprout I would take the baggie off and put the lights on.

Is either method better than the other? Is it ok to put the lights on right away, before sprouting?

Simple question, I know. I'm just curious...about to start my grow of two feminized cinderella99 beauties.

you don't need to put lights on the soil until the sprout comes up. It's still underground, and probably has its shell on still. The light will do it no good. The seedling responds to moisture and gravity, sending the taproot down and out towards a moisture source.

using the plastic wrap is good it will keep the seedling moist until it's a little older.

Greetings,

Here we go...

Take a bowl, get a wet paper towel. Moist the paper towel, not extremely wet though. Fold er in half, inside the sleeve lay the babies. Cover it up well and put it into the bowl. Then cover the bowl with surane wrap, so the moisture of the paper towel is locked inside the bowl. Basically, like a green house for your seedings. Give them 5-7 days. Check them and wet them if required. And most of all, be patient! You'll be right into it soon enough.

Be safe, love you guys.

Say Rich,
I don't use lights 'till the seedlings pop out of soil. Then flouros untill my seedlings grow a set of serrated leaves, then I put them under a 600 watt. HPS at about 2 1/2-3 feet above. Then lower the light a few inches daily 'till I'm where I wanna be (about 12-18" fer 600!)

My veg cab is permanently on cos i have different aged seedlings but i like it that the newest ones get light from the second they pop, they always grow pretty quick from day one.

The light helps to keep the soil warm, they seem to go slower in the cold
