I heard that if you cover your container with seran wrap it makes your seeds sprout faster because your holding in moisture and nutrients, is this true?

using saren wrap keeps the moisture in and humidty up and helps with getting the seeds sprouted. instead of using saren wrap i started using 2 liter soda bottles with the bottoms cut off and placing that over my starter pots.

Take it off as soon as you see sprouts above your soil.

i'm a first timer. Once the sprouts popped up i removed the saran wrap and the little sprouts immediately died. I thought this round (just popping up again) i'd keep the saran wrap on until the next set of leaves start (not the little seed leaves). Any suggestions? I also wonder if the light was too close that time.

A number of reasons could have contributed as to why your sprouts may have died. I highly doubt is was because you removed the saran wrap.

First off, It's not necessary to use lights during germination. The seedlings have yet to photosenthesize and therefore any spectrum of light is useless.

The embryo within the seed is what nourishes the seedling enough for it to develop a strong root system and rise above the soil to produce the first set of leaves (the round ones called the cotyledon). That's when it is essential to go ahead and put your seedlings on a lighting schedule. That is the start of vegetative growth.
