Step #12: Planting your popped seeds into soil. I use Miracle Grow, preferted soil & don't add perlite or anything. Water your soil before placing the seed into it. I get it fairly wet. Do not water again for several days. Step #13: Here's the important part. Most of the posts I've read, tell you to poke a hole into the dirt to put the seed in. WRONG! If you poke a hole, you are compressing the dirt. You need to take a small spoon & remove about 3/4 of an inch of dirt. Then gently sprinkle some dirt back into the bottom of the hole. This will make it much easier for the roots to get a faster, easier start. Step #14: Using tweezers & gripping the seed very lightly, place the seed, root tip down, into the hole. The seed should not be more than 1/2" below the soil, but at least 1/4" below the top of the soil. Step #15: Gently sprinkle soil over the seeds. Do not pack the dirt down.

Step #16: Place your containers under your lights. I use 2, 26 watt EnviroLights. I keep them about 10" above the soil until the germinated seeds have pushed through the soil. This usually takes a day or 2.

Step #17: You should now have successfully turned your seeds, into seedlings. Once they get their 1st set of 5 fingered leaves you can switch to your veg lighting. The next few pics, are from the day after I placed the containers under the lights. I started with 6 seeds. All six popped within 48 hours. All 6 have now been successfully turned into seedlings. I put the seeds into the dinner plates at 10:30pm on 10/25/02. I put the germinated seeds into soil at 10:30am on 10/28/02. All 6 seeds had popped their cute little heads up out of the dirt when I checked them, at 11:00pm on 10/29/02. Total time from seed to seedling. About 96 hours, 4 days. Here's the pics of the seedlings.

Last, but certainly not least is #6. A 100% success rate.

Here's the very last pic of this tutorial. I hope this helps some of you who have had a hard time getting your seeds to germinate. This is also the beginnings of my next grow. I'm going to try DWC this grow instead of my grow tube. Here's the pic. This is how close I get the lights once all the seeds have popped through the soil. They are about 4" above the tops of the seedlings. The floor is now open for questions. Later Folks. Agent 86.

![]() | Excellent tutorial, Agent! Clear and easy to follow, for sure. I do have a question about the "If you poke a hole, you are compressing the dirt" part: What if you use a dibber or pencil for making a hole in the soil? Will that be problematic? Thanks for taking the time to clarify the Mysteries of Germination -- it's where all our Grows begin!! selene | ||
