my mix has basically been covered by brindie, but i can add that it is not a good idea to buy soil at dollar stores. i made this mistake once. butterfield farms and gardenscape soil mixed with perlite is no good at all.

current soil mix
permalink

I started out with just some pre-ferted stuff from home depot (50 lb)but overwatered and made the stuff extremely acidic.(3.5 to 3.0 pH)
got smart went out to the Sonoran desert and collected about half a trunk-full of dry wash and lightly vegged topsoil (ph 8.0 to 6.5), added 18 dry qts of vermeculite and mixed throughly.

pH between 6.5 and 5.5 depending on water content have not added any ferts but transplanted what was left of my garden into the resulting soil mix. wanted to try just straight desert topsoil, but just too alkaline and VERY DENSE and heavy (mostly sand and some silt)
so the mix:
50lb preferted bag soil
50 lb Sonoran desrt soil
18dry qts Vermeculite

How about we call this one Palo Verde mix?

Hey OP,

Now that it was broke up and explained alittle....if you have something in the finished thread about outdoor mixing...the water polymers should be brought up..imho.. because they really are useful in many outdoor situations...or even in some situations were there may be an un attended indoor...anyway...a year or two back..ButterflyDreams and I were playing with them....I tried cloning with them, germing...lol...all kinds of stoner things.....until BD suggested putting them in a glass and after they swell....to drop dye in them and watch the migration...lol...the wife threw them out when I strongly suggested filling her crystal vases with my new found colourful creation... ....one thing I can say tho, is that that they absorb nutes ..like if you just pour the crystals into a bucket...no soil....and mix up a batch up nutes and pour it in...they will absorb the nutes along with the water.....on the flip side....I wouldn't suggest using them in an indoor that is being regularly attended and cared for....because they also absorb anerorbic bacteria.

To answer OldPhart statement,
no this isn't a "proven" soil mix, I can say that the resultant mix has taken my garden back from the edge of disaster, to short, green and bushy if that's any proof.
I'll add more as this progresses
BTW
the whole mix looks like this
50 lbs topsoil
50 lbs preferted commercial soil mix
18 dry qts vermeculite
bottom of each pot 2-3 inches of of coarse rock and gravel
no ferts yet

Hey Im replying to my own post!!! Im doing this because I used different nutes than posted in the first post...Im still using the mix posted however decided against using fish emulsion. Still using only organic and/or natural nutrients however:

Per 1 gallon of water (4 liters)
1 tablespoon blood meal (12-0-0)
1 tablespoom seaweed extract (0.6-0.2-0.6)
1 teaspoon sulphate of potash (0-0-50)

..of course I do not take credit for this knowledge. this info came from none other than this site to help me so maybe it can help you too

Beebs Seedling Mix:
2 8" pots of promix loose (roughly 2 gallons of promix)
2 tsp bat guano (3-10-1)
1 tbls Blood Meal (12-0-0)
3 tbls kelp meal (1-0-2)
4 tbls pulverized dolomitic lime
1 cup worm castings
3 cups perlite
1 gallon of water

I let seedling mix sit for at least a week. Yet, I have planted directly into it without any trouble.

Beebs Veg and Bloom Mix.
4cf Promix loose (2cf brick compressed)
6.75 gallons Horticultural Grade Perlite
8 cups bone meal (4-12-0)
4 cups blood meal (12-0-0)
2.3 cups kelp meal (1-.1-2)
2.3 cups New Jersey Greensand (0-0-3)
1.3 cups Sulfate of Potash Magnesia (Sol-Po-Mag 0-0-22)
12 quarts Worm castings
4 cups Pulverized Dolomitic Lime
3 crushed Mosquito dunks (fungus gnats suck)
3.3ml bonide liquid iron
8 gallons water

Mix and let sit for 1 month optimal. Can be used straight. I don't plant seeds or clones directly into the veg/flower mix -- will burn them.

I use seedling mix for 2 to 3 weeks. Seems to grow a healthy strong root system on a small plant. Plant seeds and clones into 1qt pots filled with seedling mix. Do not feed any ferts during this time. Only water.

I use ferts during every watering.

I Transplant from seedling mix to an 8" container using veg mix and use plain water during transplant, or sometimes I'll use the 1st watering nute listed below if the young plant looks hungry (yellow or dropping lower fans).

1st watering: 5ml Pure Blend Pro Veg Formula(3-1.5-4) per gallon. Ph to 6.5
2nd watering: 10ml Pure Blend Pro Veg Formula(3-1.5-4) per gallon. PH to 6.5
3rd watering: 15ml Pure Blend Pro Veg Formula(3-1.5-4) per gallon. 1ml SM90 and PH to 6.5.
4th watering: 20ml Pure Blend Pro Veg Formula (3-1.5-4) per gallon. 2ml SM90 and PH to 6.5.
5th watering: 25ml Pure Blend Pro Veg Formula (3-1.5-4) per gallon. 3ml SM90 and PH to 6.5.
6th watering: 30ml Pure Blend Pro Veg Formula (3-1.5-4) per gallon. 3ml SM90 and PH to 6.5.
I use the 6th watering fert routine for the remainder of the veg growth. I fert full strength during every watering.

During veg, I transplant whenever plant runs out of root space and just prior to root bound. If plant is rootbound, i'll slice roots apart with a razor blade (about a quarter inch deep, down entire root ball, 4 cuts, and an X cut on the bottom). I always transplant to a larger container 1 week prior to switching a plant to 12/12.

I like to let plants reach 30 inches before switching to 12/12. Usually bend the stalk gently till it forms a 90 degree bend about 14" above soil. Geuss it would be a scrog without a screen. Decent direct air flow across plants throughout veg and flower strengthens the stems enough that when buds form, the plant stems won't snap due to weight, not to mention, helps lower temps.

Switch plant to 12/12, and on first and second watering (sometimes even third), I use 30ml Pure Blend Pro Veg Formula (3-1.5-4) per gallon. 3ml SM90 and PH to 6.5. This fert routine varies depending on plants species. I'll use the Pure Blend Pro Veg Formula until the plant shows me that she shows the beginning of a strong flowering response (in other words, she shows bud building).

Then i switch to:
30ml per gallon Pure Blend Pro Fruit and Flower SOIL FORMULA (1.5-4-5), 3ml SM90, and PH to 6.4.

I use the Pure blend pro fruit and flower soil formula throughout flower until plant tosses most of its fan leaves. This is usually up until 2 (sometimes 3) weeks prior to the plants harvest date. At this time, i switch to 30ml Earth Juice Bloom (0-3-1) and PH to 6.4. Again, i will use this Earth Juice Bloom fert during every watering.

Have yet to fert burn a plant, and i do see nitrogen deficiencies often if plant is large. 77 watts psf of hps/mh mix in bloom.

I do not flush the soil at any time. Used to flush every plant 2 weeks before harvest, now i don't. I like the results of the end product better unflushed. Smoke is smooth, sweet and strong. Found the opposite was true after flushing, and found that yield was affected.

i have used Miracle-Gro potting soil now going on three years. i have had the best of luck with it, in fact i am going to try grow with Miracle-Gro mosture control potting soil next.

however i still add nutrients with every watering. i use Schults "tomato food" for vegging and Schults "Bloom plus" for bloom.

all i can say is i stay simple with my growing and it works for me.

some pictures of recent grows here
