I was getting a lil better than 65% instead of 50 % or less than 50 %. imagine rolling up all males booooooooo. using metal halide in veg, low stress with cool temps, , no changes, consistant temps lights etc. (although my soil is nuclear) all adds to the inc in fem rates. Growing in soil the gnats got rolling hard to the point i had to use a bug bomb three times to knock them down. a banana was in behind somthing and got all nasty and drew in gnats. once they infest your soil its agravating getting rid of them. I'm only buying feminized seeds and building toward using only mothers and clones. to make the whole female thing a lock. But bannas combined with low stress and the right lights will inc your female count, its a proven thing. thankx cheese i learned allot trying it it lead me to others lil things that but gnats make me crazy , lol.

At what point does a bannana stop producing ethylene in its ripening and subsequent putrefication? Could stop bugs at bannanas by putting in a mesh cage? best wishes nigel

[Ethylene gas (C2H4) is an odorless, colorless gas that exists in nature and is also created by man-made sources. Not easily detectable, it exists where produce is stored. In nature, the largest producers are plant and plant products (ie. fruits, vegetables and floral products) which produce ethylene within their tissues and release it into the surrounding atmosphere. It is also a by-product of man-made processes, such as combustion.] [Ethylene, also known as the 'death' or 'ripening hormone' plays a regulatory role in many processes of plant growth, development and eventually death. Fruits, vegetables and flowers contain receptors which serve as bonding sites to absorb free atmospheric ethylene molecules. The common practice of placing a tomato, avocado or banana in a paper bag to hasten ripening is an example of the action of ethylene on produce. Increased levels of ethylene contained within the bag, released by the produce itself, serves as a stimulant after reabsorption to initiate the production of more ethylene. The overall effect is to hasten ripening, aging and eventually spoilage. A refrigerator acts in much the same way. Kept closed to retain the desired temperature, it also enables an increased concentration of ethylene to accumulate. Author - Papadopoulou, E.; Little, H.A.; Hammar, S.A.; Grumet, R. Abstract - Members of the Cucurbitaceae family display a range of sexual phenotypes including various combinations of male, female, or bisexual flowers. Ethylene appears to be a key hormone regulating the sex determination process. Application of ethylene, or inhibition of ethylene action, increases or decreases the number of pistil-bearing buds, respectively. Elevated levels of ethylene production and expression of genes for ethylene biosynthesis, have been correlated with pistillate flower production. In this study, we sought to determine the effect of modified endogenous ethylene production on sex expression by constitutively expressing ACS (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase), the first committed enzyme for ethylene biosynthesis, in transgenic melons (Cucumis melo L.). Most melon genotypes are andromonoecious, where an initial phase of male flowers is followed by a mixture of bisexual and male flowers. ACS melon plants showed increased ethylene production by leaves and flower buds, and increased femaleness as measured by earlier and increased number of bisexual buds. ACS melons also had earlier and increased number of bisexual buds that matured to anthesis, suggesting that ethylene is important not only for sex determination, but also for development of the bisexual bud to maturity. Field studies showed that ACS melons had earlier mature bisexual flowers, earlier fruit set, and increased number of fruit set on closely spaced nodes on the main stem. These results provide a direct demonstration of the importance of endogenous ethylene production for female reproductive processes in melon. Ethylene Gas, and information about ethylene gas I'm familiar with Mr. Papadopoulos research also and he is absolutely right on the "female/Bisexual" issue, and that is what cannabis growers (who inject regulated amounts of EG in their GR's) found out. Seeds manipulated with ethylene gas when they become fems by that influence the probability its 98% the plant will hermie, otherwise become "bisexual". Since in water melons seeds don't effect potency its all right, but in cannabis plants a hermie seeded plant is as good as a pollinated female. ![]() | ||

Interested in how the the ethylene produced stimulates increased production, hastening ripening and death. For longer production of ethylene, a less sensitive fruit would be preferable ?. Lazy people should use apples. lol I agree with you about faith, i live on the hope of a better tomorrow. Thanks for the info Incognito Weedo, i should put some bannanas under my pumpkins, they are being lazy. The predominance in production of flowering sites in curcubits fed ethylene, does not change the plants sex; just the ratio of male to female flowers? It is still a bisexual hermaphrodite? The information applicable to mj, is that it stimulates increased production of female flowering sites. Production of hermie seeds Lou; that could be a good thing in one generation under controlled conditions, re pproduction of feminized seed. Do the breeders do that? Could you hermie a plant with an overdose of ethylene? thanks nigel
