Round 1 - New grow setup, only 2/8 seedlings lived (unexpected heat issues). Forgive me, for I have sinned in forgetting about the banana religion. Result: 2 males. ![]() Round 2 - Heat issues solved, remembered bananas. Result: 3/4 females for sure, the fourth is still not definite but looks female right now. Bananas be praised! ![]() | ||

Specifically, I'm wondering if plants meant to be male but exposed to bananas start out female, but hermie. I had one bad experience with a strain known to hermie (DP BB) and bananas. I haven't tried them since, mainly because I wanted some males.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | this thread is still going...holy crap. i think by this time if you havent tried it you are not going to. just be careful, ethylene is a plant growth regulator. it will do some crazy crap to your plants if you have too much concentration of the stuff. i stunted a whole crop pretty good by doing this.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Well I have some fruitings to bear now also, but my experience was not with a banana, but with a much slower ripening/rotting orange. As I have come to discover with my current grow, there was only one real difference between the two, aside from location, and that was the introduction of an orange after 2 to 3 weeks of vegetation. All plants were kept near to the same temperature (varying 5-10 degrees day/night) and treated the same way for control growth, LST. The orange in my first grow was actually able to be kept next to the plant for a good 3-4 weeks, which I believe allowed for a more steady release of the ethylene gas which could be abosrbed by the plant, allowing the female side to flourish while basically neutering the male side (it never hermied). This grow was with two plants, grown the same way with the same nutrients, albeit maybe less light. No orange or fruit of any kind was introduced. One plant was LST'ed from the beginning while the other was done much later, but to great results. Both these plants from observation over the past couple of days have turned out to be male, one of them 95% male positive. I must say it never occurred to me until today, but that was the only factor that was different. Could I have ended up with two females? Possibly. My self obtained evidence so far has suggested so. Bananas ripen much faster than oranges, so more ethylene released over a shorter time might not have as much of an effect as a steady amount of ethylene released over time like an orange ripening over 3-4 weeks. If it isn't exposed to high heat, they last!
