I read a few articles and studies on trichome production, and catalysts for trichome production...a repeating theme is herbivorial resistance, or the plants ability to defend from attackers. I read through a few 'studies' people had done using herbivorial resistance as a catalyst for trichome production, most were very conclusive...trichomes will appear in greater numbers upon a plants return in the case that it's perrenial, and in the progeny of annuals. Then just as I thought I was going to have to fill my growroom up with insects I stumbled across another study in which they use Jasmonic Acid as an artificial replacement for the real thing. I'm not going to go into specifics (mostly because I can't ) but it seems the foliar use of Jasmonic Acid triggers the same, or very similar response as an herbivorial attack in that the plant releases the same chemicals it would to repair itself and defend itself from future attacks...which generally means more trichomes

So...anyone know anything about this? I read studies that included raddishes, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and tobacco. Could it be used with MJ? Is there only one way to find out???

Now this isn't exactly the same thing as herbivorial resistance, but it's along very similar lines...Artificial Defoliation...seems convicing, but then there's that part about pulling apart your plants so I dunno about that but it's the same idea, deinetely supports the herbivorial resistance idea.

Interesting read Duner.

I read that there is an Aspen tree that grows in a grove situation.
When one edge of the grove is attacked by a worm or whatever, those trees will send out a phermone or something that triggers a defense hormone in the rest of the grove.

I am sure the terms and details of the above are , to some degree, incorrect but you get the idea.

Is it possible that MJ could do that? Could you just tear up one of the plants and reap increased tric production in crop overall?

Aspen colonies have a single root system and are essentially one plant. The roots grow and they are able to send new stems up, which turn to trees.

Now if only we could get our plants to do that...

I used to know a guy who swore picking his fan leaves made them stickier and more potent. Now I never did any side by side tests myself... But I tried to grow some weed from clones of his and could never approach the crystal content of the buds he had grown.. same strain too

Well to me it seems that if it has the proven effect of increased trichome production in other plants, then there's a fairly reasonable chance it works with MJ...and although most would swear up and down that picking your leaves will do nothing but harm, I am completely willing to try these 'theories' and will do so during my next grow, side by side comparison (not for a while though)
