Here's a really comprehensive review of currently avaialable and emerging artificial lighting technologies, published in September 2005 by the US Department of Energy. As usual it's focused on human eye applications but nevertheless is a worthwile read and a good reference for people who are interested in lighting concepts.

Warning: it's a 286-page PDF, hosted on a .gov.
