I do actually add some ascorbic acid to the water I use to clear with, during the last week or so of flowering. I add 1 tsp/gal of raw cane sugar, which has trace amounts of most of the TCA acids, and then I add just a pinch/gallon of ascorbic acid. I have never done a side-by-side, so I can't be definitive about it, but it works great for getting all the ferts out, and the herbs taste great. No harshness at all, just MJ.

A lot of people mistakenly think citric acid and Vitamin C are the same thing. In reality, they are not. They are, however, found in many of the same foods, which causes this confusion. The scientific name of Vitamin C is ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is not the same as citric acid. Citric acid is found in citrus fruits, but ascorbic acid is also found in vegetables as well as fruits.

As you can see from the diagram, the two molecules are similar, but not the same.

Ok, but do they have a similar effect on the plant? I read that using citric acid and sugar in the resevoir during flush time can inhance the flavour/odor. Would ascorbic acid do this, or does it merely boost the plant's metabalism?

ascorbic aci will break down vi the citric acid or kreb cycle at any rate, both can be used but I prefer citric as its got the highest bioavailability within a solution and loves to bind (has high affinity)to the sugars if you are using it to increase metabolic rate.

sugar in soil
permalink

sorry to butt in here - scanning the threads and read under_tokers last question on sugar added to soil and wanted to say that after reading several threads on this site about sugars and flavors that I have just recently started adding sugar to my water and I'm in the last 2 weeks of flower now.

The first time was 3-4 days ago, I added 1 tsp of regular sugar to 2 litres of water - I also use h20, again from this site, the h20 started about 4 weeks ago.

I'm not sure if this is normal or not as I am a newbie but around 2 days after adding the sugar I noticed that the colas had a lot more white pistils, I have a printer's eye, much like a jeweler's eye, and can see the trichomes clearly.

Before the sugar there seemed to be a lot more red hairs so much so that I harvested a sister plant, only a runt, and the trichomes seemed clear. You could easily see dead pistils everywhere.

2 days after the sugar, ther are a lot more white hairs, or seems to be, and the hairs are smaller as if new. On top of 2 colas are little nipples of bud where new growth seems to be happening.

About a week ago, dates written somewhere else, I measured the largest cola at 9.5", to day it measured just over 10" in length. About as thick as corn on the cob.

I'm adding more again tonight and will post another reply in a week if your interested.

BTW the plant is about 14 weeks now and flowering around 7 weeks under 400 wt MH and 150 HPS in a closet with potting soil and 10/60/10 - ferts were stopped 1 week ago and a lot leaves are starting to yellow now.

Don't know if this is of any interest or not, hope it can be.
