![]() ![]() | Topping your plants is cutting off the growing tip above the top set of leaves. Small light/space growers prefer doing this because the plant tends toward horizontal growth and not vertical. Bushy instead of tall. Smokin

![]() | SR, During what part of the plant's life is it best to be topping the plant? How often should this generally be done? How much does it slow the plant down? Should the tops be cut immediately after they emerge from between the previous set of leaves?

| from what i read anywhere from after the 2nd node, to the 4-5th node, it is up to the person. i plan to top after the 2nd node as i have seen some picks from a guy on here called uncle_ben and he has some very nice pics and good results, so im going to give it a try, and as to the amount of times you can top, this is just again from what i read, only around 2-3 or the plant start to freak out and maybe the bud would be as good, you top the plant, and 2 growth spots come out, and then you can top those, and 2 come out of that spot... blah blah blah, do some searches there is a lot of info already talked over in these boards. ![]() | Yo. I've had good results from cutting the stem off at around the 6th node or more. this alows the bottom branches to reach the top ones and gives you more top buds at the end of the cycle. If you top too many times, you delay harvest by a week or more depending on how big a light you have. I've got a 1000 super hps!!! and even thow you get more total buds, they are smaller in size, you end up with close to the same yield with topping only once, and then you can practice the twisting thing. check the post on " Super Cropping ". I can't really support the idea that this gives more bud, it seems to be really all about the other conditions, bigger pot, more light, more circulating/moving air, good water, there are many ways to improve weed, you are limited by your weakest condition. It's that simple. Once you have maxed all the growing conditions, then look at imporving your garden with these techniques. Keep that in mind folks.. highonline. | ||

I let them grow to about 8 inches, then to top them at whatever node they are at. Give them a while to grow out (usually I will do this a week before switching to 12/12, and you get a good 2-3 week recovery) Usually there will be 4-6 even tops on the plant after that. Then when they are starting to flower, I look at the shading, and take off the lower branches that aren't going to produce big buds. You can clone those, but I don't since they are flowering. Then the plant uses its energy to produce 4-6 nice top colas that get good light coverage. Makes harvesting easy that way. ![]() I have a friend that experimented with topping his colas during flowering, and he had some buds that would branch at the top like a thick nug with two buds sticking out the top. It was pretty cool, but I could see how that could go horribly wrong. ![]()
