Quick update

As noted above none of the seeds I used were any good.

I have some seeds that have shown up in my current flowering batch.
I will be using those when they are ripe. (at least 30 days from now).

I also have four plants from selfed seeds from my last outdoor harvest. They will be cloned and sexed soon. I am hoping to get a set of seeds from that as well.

In any case the mad scientist will be at in the near future.

Xenon223 and Penguin.

I had never thought about inhalation.

I will be carefull.

I have always thought about the 1st gen thing. I am using a solution at somewhere around the strength of a single dose a person would take. (I would have to check that)

The actual amount absorbed by the seed has to be miniscule. Then you spread that amount over the plant??

Unless the treatment gives the plant the ability to 'reproduce colchicine' (which I highly doubt) I don't see the issue.
It is the effect the solution has on the cell division of the germinating seed that produces the polyploidy.

This is really the question.
If you shouldn't smoke the first gen, would that also hold true for clones?
If I can't smoke clones then this is a pointless exercise.
When you breed, I don't think the cell division resulting from the colchicine transfers to the next gen.
Am I correct on this last point?

I am very interested in the answer to that question.

Thanks for the warnings guys. We are a caring group of potheads around here, aren't we

Is there something else the colchicine could do, other than to effect cell division, that could lead to problems?

I finally have some seeds to work with <madscientistchuckle>

These are hermies from my flowering crop. Not sure if I want to use it up on hermies. We will see. There will be lots more, unfortunally.

I am going to flower 4 plants from seeds in a couple of weeks. Same strain but self'ed from last season. They should be done air layering in a week or so I hope. Then it's 12/12 for the clones.

Every time I open my drawer I see the colchicine-it will get done.

Geez, I took plant genetics and evolution in the spring yet I've forgotten so much since summer began

I'm thinking mostly about one widely-used example of polyploidism (between Spartina species of grass), but when you induce allopolyploidism on your plants, could that very well make them sexually sterile?

I may be getting my words mixed up (allopolyploidy, autopolyploidy, blah blah blah), but I believe the cell division would transfer to the next generation... the chromosome number wouldn't revert back or anything, if anything it would probably get larger as the generations progress through rapid hybridization... which would lead to a high seed viability.

It sounds like a really cool experiment!!! Good luck!

I'd love to do something like that, and see how different the plants hybridize and change with the successive generations due to the colchicine treatment.

From what I've read the polyploidism DOES transfer to the next generation.
But as it has already been stated ... DO NOT SMOKE THAT FIRST GENERATION. Chances are you'll probably get more messed up then you bargined for....aka long term messed up. Or even hurt someone else who was innocently smoking your weed.

I have also heard that you can smoke clones after afew generations after that deadly chemicals get diluted and thinned out over the foliage of each generation. I've heard numbers thrown around for safe smoking from seed / clone is 2-3 / 3-4 generations respectively. But those are just estimates from people who have experimented and word of mouth spreading of info.

Personally I'd be very careful what you put in those plants as you have no idea what these chemicals will convert to once they are heated or burned.

Good luck, don't die.

It is up and running again, believe it or not.

Due to non viable seeds and a temp tear down of my grow room this has been on hold.

But I have taken another step. I have 2 closley related strains of WW/g-13/hp, and a sativa cross I love that have been polinated by an unknown male that showed 3 branches per node as opposed to two, (a poly trait).
So, I have three batches of seeds.
I am going to grow 1/3 of them as is. I want to do some backcrossing and they will also serve as a control group, of sorts.

I am going to treat 1/3 with colchicine.
I will save the other third to use in case of some kind of failure with my expierement or for whatever.

So anyway, it might be a week or two, as I want to do my seeds hempy style and have to buy all that expensive equipment

Interesting find.

I guess I would have to say the health risks are
not really worth it. The side effects seem pretty harsh to me.
