Low level ozone & Mycorrhizae experiment...
permalink

I found a very interesting study, showing increased enzymatic activity due to raised ozone levels, at ground level. Here it is...OK, its not a single study, but the breadth of enzyme response is

Since I am very soon to convert back to carbon can filter, I have several small controllable ozone machines 'spare'. They would still be used in the drying process, but I want to see if a small unit in the intake flow makes a difference to root mass & speed of growth.

I know, ozone is dangerous at high levels to humans & plants alike... The leaves will be my guide, for upper limits, as the fresh ozone will be right in there. Crazy eh? We'll see... With a timer, I think I can do it.. I'll try as soon as I get a carbon can up in there. 1 week max, & the experiment will run.

Well, I've been running ozone into the flowers for the last week or so, & built up to ~50mg/hr, or so the machine would have me believe..

The airflow through is pretty large, & there's been no visible damage to the plants. These are just about ready for cropping though, and I have just put the first of a new batch in, a seedling @ 2ft tall. This will be my guide now, as it has much more sensitive young leaves & will show damage fast, if theres too much o3.

Once I have a full chamber & they're all innoculated, I may be able to tell a difference through feel, under the nutrients. Normally with full nutrients, everything is very slippery for ~ 5 days, after innoculations. This is one way I am looking to extend the life of the mycorrhizae & aerobic bacteria, to benefit the plants & my pocket. If there is a benefit with MJ myco's, it may or may not show, but the ozone is going to keep any pollen, mould, insects, etc,in the flowerbed, under constant attack....which I like anyway.

Hey Kat...sounds like a good show. I'll be interested in your results. I've seen so much debate over ozone generators, that I've stayed away from them until it's a bit more clear.

Ozone Link

I have a bunch of diddy ones, all variable to some degree. I think the big ones (250mg/hr upwards) have serious health risks, but I am able to use placement & timers to use o3 for growing, air cleaning & drying MJ. When I saw the fun fungi had with it in Spruce forests, I thought it had to be worth a try. I've used it in the grow before, & apart from one week having a trail of damaged leaves near the intake, never used massive quantities, & had no probs with it.

Oh yes, I used a UV 'sterilising' chamber in line with the nutrients for a while too. No good now I use bacteria & myco's though..

Here is an interesting FAQ sheet on ozone.

Well, I haven't dosed with Bactivator this week...but there's a slick film on much of the sub aqua stuff still. The EC's pretty low, at 1.6 ish, pH 6.5, which helps I'm sure, but I think it could be said I'm surprised I can still feel the biota.

Anyway, I have just put ozone directly in the nutrients, so RIP to the beneficials, until the new crop hits the system. (they alraedy have beneficials added, BTW.)

Low level ozone will replace the bubbled stuff again next week, & Bactivator will be used again, as needed.

Hi Kat, interesting stuff you got goin on. Can i ask a couple questions? ok. What is Biota? and How do you put ozone in the nutrients? And why?
Lots of questions i know. but Thanks Kat

Hi Red!

Sorry, your reply slipped under the radar... Biota is just a describtion of the microbial life, sub-surface. Lots easier than typing mycorrhizae & beneficial bacteria.. The plants were in the last days before harvest, so bubbling ozonated air through the system sterilises it & gives the roots a superoxygenated blast. I understand why you ask though, and I confess it wasn't necessary in the scheme of things. Good questions.. Its still a running thing, BTW... No bugs, good roots,...
