As a furniture maker myself, I offer a tip although you have probably already done it but since you mentioned it was your first time staining: I recommend a coat of polyurethane to protect the soft pine. It will give it a harder finish and reduce the possibility of moisture penetration and also protect it from bumps and dings. From the looks of it though, it appears you may have used stain with poly in it already.
