WOW... the power of simple floresent light!, I have a small indoor bedroom grow area with four 2bulb 4ft. fixtures for a total of 360watts. I have 5 plants now and two of them are one month into flowering, I started from an unknown indicia/skunk strain seeds, I use lights that are in the red/blue part of the natural spectrum {cool white and warm white}tubes, the two that are flowering are only 11 1/2 inches tall with 8 nice branches the buds are about 1/2 inches and so frosted with resin glands it looks like snow. and the aroma smells so sweet, 30 days left to flower and defintly looking worth the wait....HAPPY GROWER....STONEYBUD-420

Lightbulb do you get worried?

thats a lot of wattage what do you do to make it not visible by infared helicopters or do you have any in your area. I live in South Florida and I know that they have a very sophisticated system spotting places that are grow rooms then raiding them.

Infrared = heat. Wattage doesn't matter. Fluorescents put out very little heat, so they'd be nearly invisible to any infrared sensors.

florescents put out more heat then HID's but it is spread out over a bigger area. Heat imaging can only read tempatures on the surface so as long as your room is not on an outside wall and they don't get a lucky shot through a window or something I think your alright. Of course you can't be venting the exhaust from those cool running lamps to the outside if you want to avoid detection.

Cool The ( light ) idea
permalink

i didn't think that flourescent bulbs would produce enough heat or light to actually grow something. me and my buddies got into the idea that if you use a heat lamp for like lizards, and put a dim color shade over the fixture, you can filture the heat into ultra violet rays. it worked for a few of our seeds. we got a few of them to grow to 3 feet in 2 months, and bud out in 3-4 when we tried the buds, they tasted more...lizardish. and it gave an awkward smell, but the buz was real nice. good luck, and if you try the heat lamp thing, make sure that the blind isn't any where near the lamp, you might catch a fire and burn your whole place down....that sux.

later all

ive just started growing with Fluorescents also.
i got six 25"tubes (3 cool whites and 3 "grow-lite") lined up vertically inside an approximately 2X2X3.5 foot cardboard box lined with aluminium foil. i have the box closed most of the time except for a "door" at the bottom where my fan is blowing cool air in 24/7. BUT THE DAMN THING STILL GETS AMAZINGLY HOT! I thought fluorescents werent supposed to give off all that much heat...which is why i used them to get away from the infra-red heat detction junkies! just as side note..the seedlings are growing jus fine opening a new set of leaves almost everyday and a half...

Small floros with fixed, unreplaceable bulbs, get much hotter than I thought they would. I replaced mine with $10, 20 watt, 2 footers, with removable bulbs that I bought at Home Depot. These do not put out that heat.
Also, the double four footers I bought at Menards for $5 without bulbs are perfect for main veg room cause they have metal reflectors off the sides. If you bend these so they point down, you can fit 8 bulbs in a less than 2 foot wide space. Thats 360 watts in 8 Sqf or 45 w/sqf, an excellent ratio.
I used to flower under this system (I now use a 430HPS) and you really must keep the plants small to maximize yield. 1.5 ozs is the best I could do with it.

250W!

I have a 250W HPS (w/Sunmaster bulb), and it rules! Of course, it rules for the one female I ended up with, but her buds are huge! I think a 250W HPS is perfect for growing a small amount for personal use. Wanna trade??
