I have downloaded the Fireworks trial, looks awesome! I set up a 500w halogen for added light but am having real problems getting the pics in focus on macro I'll get there in the end I hope

Now if I bring up a pic in Windows pic viewer or paint if you use the scroll button you can zoom in on the image which actually (in my case) brings up a better photo. Being an amateur puter user I can't work out how to save that view of the pic to download, is there a way of doing this?

The other thing is if I follow ur instructions StOney after I crop and trim my pic it ends up small where as ur example is still a nice big pic. I'm obviously missing something........ any ideas? Sorry to be a pain

Nice work Pepperpot nice bud and nice pictorial

Hi Kiwi,

Man, this has sat here for a while.

I've been using the Fireworks too and love it.

After trimming the canvas, St0ney's next step is to modify image size.

It's here that you should be able to make your photo any size (within reason) you choose. I guess too, it would be dependant on the size of the photo your camera is taking too.

I've seen some of your recent shots.... like mine, they are getting better, and better.

It appears Macromedia has suspended their free trial downloads for Fireworks MX 2004.

Where did you guys get your download??

I have noticed pictures around the site ARE getting better. Before long we will be the leaders for primo bud shots around the world. Cool!!!

Fabulous thread- we've been needing this for years.

A couple of points to reinforce: Pepperpot's got it right- you're using a digicam, so take lots of shots. Shoot, move 2" to the right, shoot, move 2" to the left, shoot, try the flash, shoot, try without flash, shoot, etc., etc. You'll end up throwing away many of the shots, but there's gold in them thar pictures! I know I'm often surprised at what I have shot unexpectedly...

And remember- do not trust your camera's autofocus. It is a brain-dead piece of silicon. It can pick exactly the wrong thing to focus on when you shoot. I've got a nice example here that is exactly 6.5K too big to upload and no editor handy. <sigh>. Anyway, use manual focus, and check the viewfinder to ensure that what you want to be in focus is actually in focus!

More advanced cameras will also allow you to mess with your settings so that you can play with your "depth of field", which is an imaginary slab of space in front of the camera that is in focus- it's not a plane (flat and without thickness), it's more of a range of depths that work. Anything in front of or behind this "slab" is out of focus, anything within is. You can achieve some spectacular results when you play with the depth of field.

Oh, my camera: I'm using a Fuji Finepix S1 Pro digital SLR for my shots, usually with a Nikkor 24-120mm 3.5-5.6f stop lens. And it's Beyooteeful.

Macros and loupes
permalink

I use a 10x and a 20x jewellers loupe for getting those killer trichome shots. It can take a lot of patience but worth it to get pictures like this……..

…..worth it yes?

The camera I use is a Kodak Easy share Dx6340 3.2mp, nothing very special. For extreme close ups I follow this procedure.

  • Set the camera to macro.
  • Most Digi-cams these days have a setting called burst, this allows you to take 3-4 shots in very quick succession, turn it on. Don’t worry if your camera doesn’t have this setting, you’ll have to spend a little more time taking the pictures.
  • I also set the camera to allow for tungsten lighting, most digi-cams will have some settings to allow for certain lighting conditions. So have a look. I do this as I take all my extreme close ups with the Hps on and no flash, burst mode does not allow the flash to be used as well.
  • Using the optical zoom only, I zoom to around 2x magnification; this again will depend on the strength of the loupe you are using. Hold the loupe as tight to the end of the lens as you can get it, while using the viewing screen on the back of the digi-cam to focus, move towards your chosen object slowly until in focus, and take plenty of shots. To get that one picture above I think I may well have taken 30 pictures. There’s no excuse really with digi-cams that you didn’t get the shot right, if you didn’t, go and take another 30, that’s the beauty of digital photography, no film costs so take 100 if you need to, I certainly have in the past.
Once I’ve selected my picture, I open it with Paint shop pro7. A cracking piece of desktop publishing software. I’ll add to this if anyone needs to know how to use Psp7 but I need to get some close up shots to work with first.
