Hey stinky,

Kinda like Groundhog Day no?

This is the How to Post Photos thread.

Teazin, go to the first post in this thread and read it. It tells you all you need to know about posting inline photos, nothing has changed.

That's why I said, "IE - read." The IE was meant to signify that you are already here.

Lightbulb Removing the HPS Yellowing
permalink

With Adobe PhotoShop 7 it's kinda simple.....talk about stumble onto something by accident.
With all of us...we frequent places we enjoy and at times we stumble onto info that's useful. Here I am again .....with Info in hand.

We've all gone thru the dreaded HPS shot....more yellow than a little bit.... actually more irritating to me than a mofo
I've tinkered with Photoshop over and over and over yet I went str8 by the answer and didn't know it again and again.

At one point in time or another, almost every indoor gardener posting pics has said.....
'They don't really look like that it's just the HPS" or 'I'll get pics when the lights are off'.

What else can you do? The HPS lights our girls love are a photographers worst nightmare

Now with a few simple clicks of the mouse you can remove that yellow/orange glow from the HPS making it look like an MH shot !!!

From my experiences Adobe PhotoShop is one of the leading programs that can do this. I'm not familiar with the others and they'll probably do the same within their programs but this one helpful hint comes from Adobe PhotoShop.

So with that picture editing ....here's what you do....

Open Adobe Photoshop 7
Click File
Click Open...then highlight the pic you want to open

Now choose the Image Menu at the top of the page
Drop menu down to Adjustments and then over to curves

Then you'll really be blown away by the super technical graph that opens and scares you back to square 1
Not to worry at all about this graph.
Simply refer to the 3 eye dropper icons.
We will work with the last one to the far right.
That last eye dropper icon is for the white point.

Click on that, and move your mouse over your picture. You should notice it has changed to the eyedropper. Move the tip of the eyedropper over something white in your picture. In this case, I use the extension cord, because it should look white and is not too close to the light, nor too far away.

Click your point and watch the dreaded 'HPS Orange' disappear!

Now, you can stop.
Just click 'Ok' and save your picture!

.....however if you want to get a more true picture, go ahead and set your Black Point and Gray Point as well. For reference, I used the Black buckets and Gray INTERIOR of the tubblers for this pic.

It can be used for any situation where your color is off, for whatever reason. Here's an example of removing the blue/purple tint cast by fluroescent grow bulbs.

Like I've said before over and over again I've passed the answer to taking that dang HPS glow out of some good pics and never knew it was right under my nose.
Just a touch of info in Milagro's thread.....some call it a "BUMP"

Thanks for the tutorial, Pro!! I've been using Picasa 2 from Google for editing. I really like it, but I'm always on the lookout for others to try. Good examples!!

Great find Profound!

I'll sure give it a try next time I have that yellow glow.

I've read somewhere that setting your camera to tungsten will help as well.

It has been a long time since we've had any new tips and/or help here in the photography department.

This thread is meant to be a continuing source of edifcation. Any other contributions are greatly appreciated as well.

Mr Mutz, I too am looking for tutorials on things that help my photo skills.
I've been reading thru a lot of online info of just generally using Photoshop 7 itself. I can tell you about 4 things to do with this Professional tool...that's it.
Resize, sharpen, lens flare and now remove HPS glow...
I received my copy of this from a friend.

I used this thread to practice posting the cut and paste feature Milagro suggested. Thank you for deleting the crappy shots. The title of the thread "How to post pictures in the threads" seemed like an open invitation to practice what you all are teaching. Sorry I offended the thread starter for what was considered a selfish act on my part. I've been strugling with some of the posting features of the website including photos. Sorry if I used this thread for practicing.

How to Post GREAT Photos in Threads is the title, that should have been the first clue.

Even so, it isn't an invitation to practice posting, start your own thread for that and let the mods close 'em if they have no topic other than to practice.

However, there is an open invitation to teach others your photo skills if you have them. Maybe to show a particular trick you (you; plural, general, generic, not necessarily personal you; swordfish) use to accomplish some photogenic feat.

Anyhow don't be afraid to post here folks.... if it's not apropos, I'll have them deleted.

ive found Adobe Lightroom significantly more effective in all aspects of photo-correction than photoshop. although photoshop is powerful, there is a large portion of the program dedicated to manipulation and from-scratch creation. Lightroom is a program for photographers and its sole purpose is to aid in the simplification of correcting colors (and the many variables that make the colors what they are), as well as other camera shortcomings... sharpness, shadows, lense vignetting , etc etc. The only things that lightroom will do to manipulate are cropping and a dust-removal/red eye tool. Generally for better photographs, i will import to lightroom do the necessary adjustments then export to photoshop for any post processing (words, borders, etc)

i urge everyone who finds photoshop to be a powerful tool to try adobe Lightroom. since i stumbled across it, i very very rarely ever use photoshop for any sort of photo-correction. lightroom is more powerful , simpler, and more focused in terms of what a photographer wants.

heres what the prog. looks like. The many configurations of before/after, are great.
